- 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
- 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday
- 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday
- 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday
Chesapeake Animal Services is now open Wednesdays from 12 p.m.- 4 p.m. for strays and reclaims in hopes of quickly reuniting pets with their families. On Wednesdays, please follow signs to the side lobby for assistance if you have found a stray or are looking for a lost pet.

The Chesapeake Animal Services Unit, located at 2100 S. Military Highway, operates under the umbrella of the Police Department and is staffed by 11 officers, an animal control officers supervisor and one superintendent. They enforce the State and City codes pertaining to animals and their ownership. They have the authority to issue summonses for violations, to secure warrants and to seize animals. Shelter support staff consists of 1 animal care supervisor, 7 shelter attendants, and 3 office assistants. Further support is provided by dedicated volunteers.
Officers on Duty
Temporary change in hours due to staffing shortages:
Effective Monday April 11, Animal Control Officers will be on duty from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. They respond to complaints such as: cruelty, animal bites, stray domestic animals, at large complaints, nuisance, vicious, injured and/or sick animals. One evening shift officer is on call for emergencies only after the end of that shift, until 8 a.m. the next morning. If you would like to report a complaint to an Animal Control Officer, please call the police non emergency number at 757-382-6161.
Deceased Animals
CASU does not pick up deceased animals. Owners may pay a fee for the disposal of their deceased pets' remains at the facility. A general customer service request may be submitted online at the Chesapeake Customer Contact Center or call 757-382-CITY (757-382-2489) for stray deceased animals along roadways.
